Researching a market, then generating the right keywords, followed by organising the ads and getting the whole lot published onto the world wide web is no small task. It’s at this stage that, without any pay per click strategy, that a lot of expensive mistakes are made - often very expensive.

While your ads should now be appearing on Google’s pages are they in the right position and are you overpaying every time they are clicked on ?

I will now describe my own method for opening the bidding on my keywords, this is the plan I use with all of my campaigns. This method works - well certainly for me - but I am not claiming that you will make money or that there are not other ways of reaching the same end that you may prefer.

To begin with I would have around 150 ad groups in my ppc campaign, there would be one keyword in every group in the three formats available.  Two ads enable you to find which gets the least clicks then replace it with another to try and beat the ‘control’ version.-The best performing ad is the ‘control’, the click through rate of which you are constantly trying to better with the second ad. The headline of the ad should always be your keyword phrase unless it is more than 25 characters long and in that case you will have written a default headline for this very situation. Keywords, as I mentioned, can be used in three formats, phrase - “keyword”, exact - [keyword] and broad, which has nothing around it.

Taking the profit I make from a sale, I divide it by fifty and that is my opening bid - I think I need to make that a little clearer. Lets take a situation where my profit on a sale is $30, two per cent of that is sixty cents - my opening bid.

To begin with go into your adwords account and select ‘edit campaign settings’. I sell only to the major English speaking countries so, using the option at the foot of this page, I opt for the USA, Canada, The UK, Australia and New Zealand. Switch off the ‘content’ option, put the ads on ‘rotate’ and set your daily budget. Only you can decide how much this will be but please remember to multiply the amount you choose by 30 and be certain that you can easily afford that per month.

I have discovered that having my ads in position 3, 4 or 5 is best, you should get plenty of clicks and will be paying less, often a lot less, than those ads in positions 1 and 2. Getting your ads just where you want them and reducing your costs per click will be the subject of another article.

Making good money by advertising using Google Adwords ads is possible but only with the right per per click management strategy.
